There shouldn’t be much suspense here so I’ll get right to it. The most overplayed song of 2011 is…
PUMPED.
UP.
KICKS.
(By Foster the People)
My goodness, this song. This is a special case in the overplayed song file. I simply can’t escape this song. It. Is. Everywhere. Songs get overplayed all the time, but with Pumped Up Kicks you get a song that for whatever reason has ridiculous crossover appeal as evidenced by it being played on virtually every radio station with the capacity to play music. While driving my car flipping through radio stations I found it being played on rock stations, pop stations, even rap stations. Was it remixed? Of course. Merely being in public exposes me to this song. At a restaurant, walking by a store, anywhere and everywhere. I was out last night at Dave and Buster’s and was surprised when it took all of 15 minutes from the time I walked in for it to be played. Really, what took so long?
Thing is, I actually liked the song. And when I say liked, I mean that I liked it the first 167-282 times I heard it, which I believe took about a month (OK, slight exaggeration (Maybe)). My relationship with this song goes something like this:
1st time (I heard the song): That was interesting. I think I liked that.
2-70: Enjoy hearing it played for the most part.
71-282: Man, this song gets played a lot. (flipping to other radio stations calmly most of the time)
283-343: Is there anything else on the radio? (flipping to other radio stations every time, now with increased anger)
344-489: Literally mocking the song as it starts playing. Most of the time when I am alone in the car. (immediately turn the radio station to anything that is not this song)
490-at least 1,000: SERIOUSLY?!!!!!!!!! Haven’t America’s radio stations done enough to this song! It’s dead! You murdered it! Just let it rest in peace you monsters! (almost break my radio turning the station)
Pumped Up Kicks, is a wildly overplayed song. As we are only hours away from 2012 my hope is that it may soon go away so I can start the five-year period it will take before I can enjoy the song even slightly. I’m not feeling too optimistic.
In case you haven’t had enough…
P.S. Happy New Year!
Haha just goes to show how much I listen to radio. I have never heard this song. I feel old and out of it now. 🙂
I heard it at Victoria’s secret last night and thought to myself, “what the hell is this song still playing”! Have you heard the argument about the song being about Columbine?
Sorry, meant to respond earlier. The last five times I’ve been in the car (for 20 minutes or longer) it has played four times on the radio. I’ve heard the rumor that it has something to do with the shooting spree at a mall in Nebraska in 2007. Haven’t heard the Columbine one though.
Ya maybe it was about that particular one. Anyways, still a shit song.
